Six colleges · classes of 2 or more credits with students, cross-listed and split sections counted once · credit hours: every section’s credits, sections under 2 credits included · appointment courses, internships, practica, independent study and theses left out · 19-20, 26-27 partial years, not plotted
Every class of 2 or more credits in WSU's public class search (a section under 2 credits, such as a lab, is not counted as a class, but its credits count in credit hours), Spring 2020 through Fall 2026, by academic year (23-24 = Fall 2023 + Spring 2024 + Summer 2024; the budget pages call that year FY24). Cross-listed classes, overflow sections, sections taught by the same person at the same days, time, dates and room, and same-numbered online listings under two subjects where one quota is at most half the other count once; credit hours offered sum the credit value of every class, sections under 2 credits included; appointment courses, internships, practica, co-ops, independent and directed study, theses and dissertations are left out of every figure, whatever schedule type they carry (details under About). Sections with no students enrolled are left out of every figure. 19-20 is not plotted: the data has Spring 2020 + Summer 2020 only. 26-27 is not plotted: the data has Fall 2026 only. Honors College and Innovation and Design courses are not plotted but stay in the data.
| College | 20-21 | 25-26 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business | 32.7 | 41.6 | +27.0% |
| Applied Studies (Education) | 20.0 | 19.7 | −1.3% |
| Engineering | 29.4 | 31.8 | +8.4% |

| Liberal Arts & Sciences | 20.8 | 22.7 | +9.0% |
| Six colleges | 22.5 | 25.3 | +12.2% |
Class size (students enrolled per class of 2+ credits, merged sections): across the six colleges the average section went from 22.5 students in 20-21 to 25.3 in 25-26 (+12.2%); Business grew the most, 32.7 → 41.6.
| College | In person | Hybrid | Online | Student credit hours in online classes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business | 24% | 18% | 58% | 69% |
| Applied Studies (Education) | 13% | 17% | 71% | 76% |
| Engineering | 71% | 26% | 3% | 3% |
| Fine Arts | 85% | 2% | 13% | 25% |

| Liberal Arts & Sciences | 65% | 6% | 29% | 34% |
Mode of delivery. In 25-26, Fine Arts taught the largest share of its classes fully in person (85%) and Applied Studies (Education) the largest share online (71% of classes, 76% of its student credit hours). Read the trend with care: no class was coded in person from Fall 2020 through 2021, and Banner replaced its delivery codes in Spring 2024 (the old hybrid code also covered classes now coded fully in person), so in-person and hybrid shares compare like-for-like only from 24-25; online shares compare from 20-21; section counts and class sizes are comparable across all years.
Liberal Arts & Sciences cut the most sections — 1,717 in 20-21 to 1,543 in 25-26 (−10.1%), credit hours offered −12.4% — while its student credit hours went −3.5%. Across the six colleges, sections offered went from 3,795 to 3,697 (−2.6%) and student credit hours from 271,404 to 291,669 (+7.5%): fewer, larger classes. Sections 20-21→25-26 by college: Business 394→417 (+5.8%); Applied Studies (Education) 529→580 (+9.6%); Engineering 306→360 (+17.6%); Fine Arts 443→402 (−9.3%); Health Professions 406→395 (−2.7%); Liberal Arts & Sciences 1,717→1,543 (−10.1%).
every figure on this page comes from these official publications
What each figure measures: the Handbook.
Unofficial, independent, not affiliated with Wichita State University, and not guaranteed accurate — do your own assessment. This site is a personal, independent compilation of publicly published budget books, budgeted-employee reports and state payroll records. It is not affiliated with, reviewed by or endorsed by Wichita State University or any other university, and nothing here is an official figure or statement. The numbers were extracted by software and the answers are generated by an AI assistant; both can contain errors (mis-read lines, mis-matched names, mis-classified titles, mistaken interpretation), and salary figures are budgeted or payroll amounts, not what any person ultimately earned. Nothing on this site is advice, and it must not be used for any employment, compensation, evaluation or other decision. Treat everything as a starting point: ask the data box your own questions, plot what you want to see, and verify against the official documents listed under Data sources at the top of the page.
What data this site holds. Wichita State budgets and budgeted employees for FY2019–FY2027, set against the published budgets of Kansas State, Oklahoma, Nebraska–Omaha and Colorado State. Budgeted salaries by name, rank and department for every faculty member at Wichita State, the University of Kansas and the University of Nebraska campuses (UNL, UNO), and for the non-faculty staff named in the Wichita State budget books. Actual income (calendar-year total pay received, from state payroll records via KansasOpenGov) for every employee at the three Kansas universities, Wichita State, Kansas and Kansas State, for 2021–2025. Questions in the Ask box are answered only from this data.
How the figures were computed. Every number on this site was extracted from the source documents and calculated by deterministic, re-runnable scripts — the same inputs always give the same figures, and no number was typed by hand or produced by AI. AI is used only to phrase the Ask-the-data answers from those precomputed figures. Where a figure is an estimate (promotion increments from the budget books’ medians, hire-year vacancy budgets), the page says so where it appears.
The course figures on this page were collected by software from Wichita State's public class search and summarized by rule (academic year grouping, cross-list merging, credit-hour filters) described where they appear; they are a snapshot of the schedule as published, not official enrollment or workload statistics.
This site is a personal, independent compilation and analysis of publicly available documents: the annual operating budget books and budgeted-employee reports published by Wichita State University, the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, the University of Nebraska system and the University of Oklahoma, enrollment factbooks, and the State of Kansas payroll records published through KansasOpenGov. It is not an official publication, statement, or position of any of those universities, the Kansas Board of Regents, the State of Kansas, or any of their offices, and has not been reviewed or endorsed by them. The author is a faculty member acting in a personal capacity.
Figures were extracted programmatically from PDF and spreadsheet documents, linked across years and across sources by name, and summarized by software. The "Ask the data" answers and the "why this salary changed" explanations are generated by an AI assistant from that data. While figures were cross-checked against the source documents during preparation, extraction, name-matching, title-classification, department-merging and AI-interpretation errors are possible, and some figures (hire-year vacancy budgets, split budget lines, merged department names) are the author's reconstructions, explained where they appear. Budgeted salaries are what a budget book funded a position at, and payroll figures are calendar-year totals as published by the state; neither is a statement of what any individual ultimately earned, and none of it is advice. Nothing on this site should be used for any employment, compensation, evaluation, hiring or other decision about any person — readers should verify against the original source documents linked in this page's footer. Everything is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, and the author accepts no liability for errors or for any use made of it. Names appear only as they are printed in those public records; anyone who believes a figure about them is wrong is invited to point to the source line and it will be corrected. Category labels ("Instruction," "Academic Support," "Institutional Support," etc.) and their plain-language descriptions reflect WSU's own budget-program definitions; the "faculty salary proxy" language used for Instruction is this author's characterization, not an official designation, since the Instruction program also includes some non-salary instructional costs.
